153rd National Evangelical Festival Brings Over 12,000 to Karkku

According to a press release from ePressi, Suomen Luterilainen Evankeliumiyhdistys (Sley) organised its National Evangelical Festival in Karkku, Sastamala, from 26 to 28 June, marking the event's 153rd consecutive edition. More than 12,000 visits were recorded during the weekend under the theme Trust in God.

A hot weekend at the Karkku Evangelical Folk High School grounds focused on Bible teaching, spiritual music, mission work and age-specific programmes for children, early teens and young people. The family rock service Riemumessu drew the largest crowd, and many participants described the festival as a spiritual home where songs, sermons and friendships pass between generations.

Fifteen missionaries were blessed on the closing day for work in Kenya, Estonia, Uganda, Japan, East Asia and Finland's immigrant ministry; several were short-term project missionaries. The festival was built and run by volunteers. Just over 500 people contributed more than 1,200 volunteer shifts. "I am touched by how people of all ages, even children, asked what they could do to help at the festival," project manager Timo Vehviläinen said.

Tom Säilä, a Sley executive, tied the theme to everyday life in his address, comparing God's commandments to the guardrails on a bridge that protect travellers. Youth work leader Juha Heinonen said he was grateful for unexpectedly high youth turnout; organisers had expected about 1,000 young people but more than 1,500 were present simultaneously in the youth tent on Saturday night.

The programme also featured concerts by rap duo Immanuel and pop-rock band Kotiinpalaajat, late-night worship in Karkku Church and a popular children's lineup including Pienlähettiläs and a Bible quiz judged by Åbo Akademi academics. Säilä closed by inviting participants to return next year to Karkku, and organisers listed a programme of regional festivals across Finland through October, including events in Tampere, Kouvola and Helsinki.
