Tickets for Tampereen Teatteri's autumn run of Antti Mikkola's stage adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo are 98% sold ahead of its premiere on 21 October.
Antti Mikkola's stage adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo opens on Wednesday 21 October at Tampereen Teatteri's Main Stage. Tickets for the 16 autumn performances are 98 percent sold. The news follows the theatre's earlier autumn programme preview that listed Monte Cristo among five new premieres theatre's autumn programme announcement.
Directed by Mikkola, the production turns Alexandre Dumas's novel into an intense dramatic experience and will remain in the company's repertoire through spring 2027. It traces Edmond Dantès's wrongful imprisonment and the moral and psychological fallout of his quest for justice and revenge.
Mikkola said he has been struck by questions of heroism: what happens when injustice becomes part of a person's identity and when the belief in being right begins to justify everything. He added that the greatest strength can be to relinquish bitterness and the right to revenge.
Lasse Viitamäki takes the leading role. He graduated as an actor in 2024 and is now attached to Tampereen Teatteri. The cast also includes Risto Korhonen as Abbé Faria and Pia Piltz as Mercedes, with Konsta Laakso, Toni Harjajärvi, Jukka Leisti and others in supporting parts. The production includes demanding prison sequences and staged combat.
The creative team includes Teppo Järvinen (set design), Mari Pajula (costumes), Tiiti Hynninen (lighting and video), Jonna Lindström (makeup and masks), Hannu Hauta-aho (sound) and Oula Kitti (fight choreography). Production photos will be posted to the theatre's image bank on 19 October.
