Akaa proposes 0.5-point municipal tax rise to raise €1.8m
Akaa is proposing a 0.5 percentage-point municipal tax increase from 9.9% to 10.4% to raise about €1.8 million, but officials say deeper spending cuts and service reductions will still be needed.
A proposal before the city board would raise the municipal income tax from 9.9% to 10.4%, bringing in roughly €1.8 million, YLE reports. That will not be enough. Officials say Akaa must also trim operating spending by roughly €3.9 million over the next five years and pare back its service network as the number of children in the town falls.
If approved, the increase would make Akaa the municipality with the highest municipal income tax rate in Pirkanmaa; this year Urjala and Hämeenkyrö levy 10.3% and 10.2% respectively. Part of the town's strain comes from a nearly €4 million cut in state subsidies for 2024 and a projected roughly €5 million negative social and healthcare item in 2027.
Akaa invested more than €85 million in schools and daycares between 2019 and 2025 and plans further spending on Toijala's daycare and on development around the railway area. City manager Antti Peltola said the situation has been challenging for years. He pointed to large planned projects such as a proposed Quatum Oy biorefinery, a multi-hundred-million-euro investment that could expand the tax base in coming decades.
It arrives amid wider regional budget strain after state subsidy cuts, with Pirkanmaa officials calling for more road and rail funding and a rethink of municipal subsidy cuts as regional officials urged. Nearby municipalities are taking different approaches; Pirkkala, for example, kept its tax rates steady despite forecasting a multi-million-euro deficit as recent budget decisions showed.
