Autumn Rains Restore Lake Levels Across Pirkanmaa, Kanta‑Häme
Autumn rains have raised lake levels across Pirkanmaa and Kanta‑Häme, returning many lakes to seasonally normal heights while some northern lakes are close to flood levels.
Rainfall from August to October was above average in Pirkanmaa, lifting the surfaces of many natural lakes after a dry summer, YLE reports. The reversal follows warnings of a dry spring and mid‑summer reports that rain soaked into parched soil instead of replenishing lakes.
In northern Pirkanmaa several lakes are now close to flood level: Tarjanne, Pihlajavesi and Keurusselkä. Lakes in southern Pirkanmaa and regulated headwaters in Kanta‑Häme have also risen.
Kangasala’s Vesijärvi, Vehkajärvi and Loppijärvi have returned to typical autumn levels. They had fallen during a long spell of low water after a small spring flood and a dry early summer.
Major regulated lakes, including Näsijärvi, Tampere’s Pyhäjärvi, Vanajavesi, Kyrösjärvi and Rauta‑Kuloves, are at normal levels. Officials have lifted a discharge restriction at the Valkeakoski power plant that had been used to prevent excessive drawdown on Mallasvesi and Längelmäves.
