Coalition Prevents Steeper Cut, Secures €800,000 for UKK Institute in 2027
The government set the UKK Institute's 2027 appropriation at €800,000, higher than the €200,000 proposed by the Ministry of Finance.
According to Yle, in Tuesday's budget meeting the government set the UKK Institute's 2027 appropriation at €800,000, far above the €200,000 proposed by the Ministry of Finance.
Juha Mustonen, the institute's finance and administration director in Tampere, called the result disappointing compared with earlier levels but manageable. "We can live with it," he said, while acknowledging the organisation must find ways to cover the shortfall.
The institute has already faced reductions this year, when an original grant of €918,000 was lowered to €826,200 in April. The organisation has appealed that decision to the administrative court.
Minister of Social Affairs and Health Wille Rydman said in a text message that funding should be cut further, and even abolished, arguing the institute is politically networked and not essential to everyday life. He said coalition partners prevented a deeper cut.
Mustonen said the budget fight may have also helped secure the institute a firmer footing in government discussions. He expects the funding level to remain similar next year.
The outcome follows regional calls during budget talks to protect the UKK Institute's grant. It comes after Rydman had previously questioned the institute’s legal status and funding when speaking in Tampere in August.
