Construction has begun on a renewed memorial at Kalevankangas Cemetery for victims of the 1918 mass grave, including name-bearing structures, new pathways, lighting and a plaque by artist Johanna Lecklin.
Work has begun on a renewed memorial at Kalevankangas Cemetery for victims of the 1918 mass grave, city officials said.
Partners include the City of Tampere, Tampere Art Museum, Museum Centre Vapriikki, the Finnish Labour Museum Werstas, the Tampere Federation of Evangelical Lutheran Parishes and labour organisations. Funding has come from trade unions, political groups, foundations, cooperatives and other associations.
The city first proposed the initiative in 2013 and renewed it in 2020, after research led by Museum Centre Vapriikki and Antti Hannunen identified roughly 2,500 names connected to the site. The researchers warn the list may be incomplete or contain inaccuracies. It includes civilians, White combatants and a small number of Russians.
The renewal will add name-bearing structures, new pathways, lighting and landscaping, along with a memorial plaque by visual artist Johanna Lecklin. Her piece, costing roughly €30,000, will join the City of Tampere’s art collection. Construction and manufacturing contracts were awarded to Karhen Rakennus Oy and Metallityöliike Juholat Oy, and the total project budget is estimated at about €214,000.
