Erkkilänkatu Renewal Begins With Bridge Works in Tampere

Väylävirasto announced that Erkkilä Bridge construction is progressing on schedule as part of the Tampereen henkilöratapiha project, with Erkkilänkatu being renewed this spring to provide separate lanes for motor vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. The plan also expands improvements around Juhannuskylä School, including a rebuilt rotvalli retaining wall and updated street furniture and lighting. The work aims to improve mobility and safety across the corridor in central Tampere.

The project has already installed railing frames and cable routes for lighting, and spring street works will renew the full length of Erkkilänkatu. Project manager Jetro Matilainen of Väylävirasto notes that the guard rails and lighting will be completed by May, and adds that progress depends on spring weather. "The guard rails and lighting will be ready by May, and we are hoping for a warm spring," he said.

A dedicated bike lane will be created on Erkkilänkatu between Rautatienkatu and Peltokatu, significantly improving cycling conditions that previously lacked a separate lane. Spring also brings updates to road layers, paving, and road markings, with the old rotvalli retaining wall reinstalled as part of the renewal; municipal utilities on both sides of the bridge were updated last autumn.

Part of the Juhannuskylä Schoolyard has served as the project site. A natural stone retaining wall completed as part of the works will be retained, and a bicycle shelter will be built with new trees planted. The schoolyard will be restored and the playground equipment relocated back to the yard, with the yard available to pupils again in autumn, according to Mika Huhtala of Kreate.

In May, there will be some noise as the steel work platform under the bridge is dismantled. The dismantling requires two uninterrupted rail outages, scheduled for May 2–3 and May 9–10. Each outage is expected to last about 40 hours, running from 6:40 on the first day to 22:40 on the following day, with limited nighttime noise otherwise anticipated. No further major outages or night work are expected beyond these periods.

According to Tamperelainen, the outages are tied to removing a steel scaffold beneath the Erkkilänkatu bridge as part of the Tampere personnel rail yard project.
