Experimental drug TEV-408 limits gluten-induced intestinal damage in trial with Tampere patients

An international trial that included patients from Tampere University Hospital found that the experimental drug TEV-408 eased celiac symptoms and protected intestines during controlled gluten exposure.
Participants from the Pirkanmaa region received either TEV-408 or a placebo and were given small, controlled amounts of gluten over six weeks. After an eight-week follow-up, those on TEV-408 had significantly less gluten-induced intestinal damage and inflammation and reported milder digestive symptoms. The difference was clear.
Juha Taavela, the Tays gastroenterologist who led the local study, said the findings matter because some patients have severe reactions to tiny, hard-to-avoid amounts of gluten. Avoiding them can be nearly impossible in everyday life.
TEV-408 remains experimental and will need further trials to confirm its effectiveness and safety before any clinical approval.
The study builds on other clinical work at Tays, including trials of oral baricitinib to delay Type 1 diabetes launched in July and earlier drug-development work at Tampere University that has advanced toward clinical trials.
