Free Particle-Emission Tests for Combustion Cars Start at Finnpark P‑Hämp

Drivers in Tampere can get a free estimate of their car’s particle emissions during voluntary exhaust measurements at the Finnpark P‑Hämp parking garage on April 21–23 and April 27–29.

The tests are run by Tampere University’s Aerosol Physics Laboratory together with instrument-maker Dekati Oy, following a multi‑university study that found roughly 10% of combustion cars produce about half of harmful particle emissions.

Researchers aim to sample hundreds of combustion‑engine cars. Electric cars will not be measured; hybrids are handled case‑by‑case. Each test takes only a few minutes. Participants provide vehicle registration details, receive an indicative emissions result and a complimentary 30‑minute Finnpark parking voucher.

The project is part of Tampere’s wider efforts to improve urban air quality and to harmonize vehicle emissions data across EU countries, project lead Assistant Professor Panu Karjalainen said.
