Ilves Gears Up for 17-Team 2026–27 Liiga Season

In a summer message to members published by Ilves, the club said eleven consecutive wins across December and January gave Ilves its longest single-season winning streak in club history. The message outlined plans for the 2026–27 Liiga transition year, which expands the top flight to 17 teams and lengthens the regular season to 64 games. The league opener is on 1 September; Ilves’ home opener at Nokia Arena is on 25 September.

The summer message follows earlier announcements, including the club's May season launch and the publication of the 2026–27 schedule and opening of season-ticket sales. CEO Risto Jalo reviewed last season’s highs and lows: Ilves finished in the Liiga regular-season top four for the fifth straight year but lost the bronze game to SaiPa after tight quarterfinal and semifinal series. In the Champions Hockey League Ilves won all preliminary-round games, beat Fischtown Pinguins in the first playoff round and were eliminated by Luleå HC in the quarterfinals.

Ilves U20 won the regular season for the first time since 2014–15 and took Finnish championship silver. The women's team, the N20 squad and the boys U16 side each finished with Finnish championship bronze medals, and the club placed second in the Aaro Kivilinna memorial award standings.

Jalo acknowledged a challenging economic environment for local clubs and sponsors, and said the senior squad is on summer break after a joint training period; practice matches begin in August. The club confirmed it will return to the Spengler Cup after a 54-year absence and reminded supporters that Early Bird season tickets are available until 31 July. Jalo closed by thanking fans and partners and stressing the club’s commitment to the community and continued development.
