The Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation awarded €1.141 million in grants to Tampere University staff and doctoral candidates this year, distributing 29 awards ranging from €16,000 to €88,000, Tamperelainen reports. The largest grants went to Jaana Parviainen, Anne Koski and Juho Rantala for their project Ideologies of Technology Policy, and to Mikko Poutanen’s team for Return to Political Alienation. The foundation prioritizes early-career researchers. Across its science funding this year it granted 239 awards, 182 of them for doctoral research. Tampere’s recipients include doctoral students in the natural sciences, social sciences and engineering. Competition was stiff. The general grant call drew 6,473 applications, with about 7 percent receiving funding. Overall, 63 percent of the foundation’s support went to science, 16 percent to the arts and 21 percent to societal activity and other forms of support. Earlier this year Tampere University also received support from other foundations, including a €292,000 Alfred Kordelin Foundation grant in April for protein-based rare earth extraction research.
