KooKoo’s Unconventional Play Lifts Them Toward Finals

Aamulehti reports that KooKoo in Kouvola has reached the Finnish ice hockey play-off quarter-final stage after posting the club’s best-ever regular season, finishing second just two points behind Tappara.

The paper says head coach Jouko Myrrä has been building a team identity aimed at more than just short-term results, hinting at a quiet internal season goal they did not shout to outsiders. It also highlights how KooKoo’s success comes despite statistics that seem to run counter to traditional expectations: they recorded the lowest puck possession rate among Liiga teams, made the fewest passes with second-worst passing accuracy, and still allowed opponents the second most expected goals.

Aamulehti adds that Myrrä believes the style is working because the team plays with controlled aggression and confidence, constantly moving the game forward after puck recoveries and adjusting even when defending. With goalies Eetu Randelin and Juha Jatkola performing strongly and the coaching staff emphasizing areas such as battling and winning front-of-net play, Myrrä says the lessons from last spring’s play-off disappointment are now feeding into this year’s tougher readiness. Myrrä, who lives in Tampere and trains mainly by riding from home to the rink, also comments that he has never really seen his hockey work as something he goes to like a job.
