Postimuseo has digitised almost 200 Erik Bruun stamp sketches, making his detailed preparatory drawings – many featuring birds and other nature motifs – available online to researchers and the public.

The online exhibition gives national and international audiences access to almost 200 stamp sketches from the museum's collection, following the popular "Erik Bruun's Birds" display at Vapriikki in Tampere earlier this year.

Born on 7 April 1926, Bruun is one of Finland's best-known graphic artists. Celebrated for posters and illustrations that have reached multiple generations, he has designed more than 50 postage stamps since the 1980s.

Postimuseo's holdings include nearly 200 of Bruun's stamp sketches, allowing visitors to trace his creative process from initial idea to finished issue. Many works focus on nature motifs, including owls, cranes, swans and other birds familiar from the Finnish landscape, and the sketches emphasise the fine detail that characterises Bruun's hand. Stamps are small, but the sketches reveal remarkable precision.

The museum has also published a companion blog post by researcher Sanna Oikarinen that examines Bruun's working methods and the nuances of his stamp compositions.

By digitising these sketches, Postimuseo aims to make a large portion of its collection more accessible to researchers, collectors and the general public.
