A neighbour spotted smoke rising from a house on Marmorikatu in Tampere on Monday and alerted emergency services. Firefighters extinguished a small blaze believed to have started in an electrical appliance, and no one was injured.

A house fire broke out on Marmorikatu in Tampere on Monday, October 26. No one was home; a neighbour's alert helped stop the blaze from spreading, the rescue department said.

A neighbour noticed smoke coming from the home's ventilation duct and called the emergency call centre shortly after 3:00 PM. By the time firefighters arrived, the windows were already darkened by smoke; crews extinguished the initial fire, checked the building and ventilated the rooms.

Officials believe the fire started in an electrical appliance. Tight building structures limited the supply of oxygen. That helped the blaze die down before it became fully developed and prevented wider damage to the house.

This month Tampere has seen several small residential fires. One was an apartment fire on Irjalankatu earlier this week that was extinguished with no injuries. Another scorched the outer wall of a row house in Kaukajärvi on Oct. 21 which caused only minor damage.
