Tampere's new Särkänsilta pedestrian and cycle bridge, linking Särkänniemi amusement park to Mustanlahti harbour, will open to pedestrians and cyclists on June 18.

Tampere’s new Särkänsilta — a two-armed, dual-span pedestrian and cycle bridge linking the Särkänniemi amusement park to Mustanlahti harbour — will open to pedestrians and cyclists on June 18, Yle reports.

Construction has progressed according to plan, officials say. The bridge will provide a direct walking and cycling link between the park and the harbour, improving waterfront access.

The project sparked controversy last year when Särkänniemi said it would not move its main gate to the bridge. New studies found most visitors continued to use routes past the former dolphinarium, a finding that changed the plans. Critics argued the bridge reduces berthing space at Mustanlahti harbour.
