Only Alasjärvi beach in Tampere showed a small amount of cyanobacteria on the city's monitoring map; most bathing sites were clear and surveillance continues through the end of September.

As of Monday morning, only the Alasjärvi beach showed a small amount of cyanobacteria on the city's observation map, with most bathing sites clear, Aamulehti reported.

The observation map is published on Tampere's outdoor exercise conditions service. Neighboring Kangasala had slightly more reports; small findings were listed for Ukki-järvi and Kirkkojärvi, though the most recent entries are six days old. The Permit and Supervision Agency coordinates monitoring with municipal environmental and health authorities and the Finnish Environment Institute. Last week, national tracking showed a generally good situation in Pirkanmaa.

Of 53 observation points, 34 reported no cyanobacteria, two recorded small amounts and 17 had no measurements. Surveillance runs through the end of September, with updates every two weeks until mid-August. Observers say small amounts appear as green, blue-green or yellowish particles or narrow streaks. Larger blooms form mats or scums on calm water. Simple field checks can help distinguish cyanobacteria from other algae, for example rubbing a sample with a stick to see whether it breaks into particles, or leaving a water sample to see if cyanobacteria rise within an hour because of gas vacuoles.
