Osmo Vasara, a Tampere driving instructor and musician, died in Tampere on 21 September 2026 at the age of 98.

Osmo Vasara died in Tampere on 21 September 2026 at the age of 98, Aamulehti reported.

Born in Juva on 3 February 1928, Vasara grew up as the only child on the Lauteala farm by Kotijärvi and trained at an agricultural school at 17. Finding the family fields too stony for profitable farming, he moved into hauling logs by truck. He later attended a sculpture school, although woodworking remained a hobby used to build boats and home furniture. He learned to drive in an era when licences were rare in rural Finland. He later recalled converting his private licence to a professional one without taking a test.

In the 1960s he ran Esso service stations in Mäntyharju and Inkerois before retraining as a driving instructor at Autokoulu Pirkan in Tampere. His long career continued in Tampere, joining a local tradition of veteran trainers exemplified by the 40-year career of instructor Kimmo Eiranto.

Music was a lifelong passion. He played in the Laulajat men's choir orchestra on accordion, clarinet and saxophone.

An active sportsman, he earned numerous Pirkan Hiihto and Pirkan Hölkkä medals.

He married teacher Pirkko Hämäläinen in 1952. Their marriage lasted more than 60 years; they had three children and about a dozen grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His daughter Heljä Vasara described him as the family's unflagging storyteller and a steady support, and said he spent summers renovating the Kotijärvi house that is now cared for by his descendants.
