Plan would put hotel behind Tampere central fire station, replace Hotel Pinja with eight-storey block

Tampere's urban planning committee will consider a zoning proposal next Wednesday that would allow a hotel behind the city's central fire station and an eight-storey replacement for Hotel Pinja in Juhannuskylä, Tamperelainen reports.
The proposal focuses on the Lapintie 4 block, where the 1924 Voima commercial and cultural building stands. The adjoining fire station extension would be demolished to make room for a hotel. Planners also propose reopening the old Palokunnankatu link for cycling and walking all the way to Pellavatehtaankatu, while protecting the Voima building and permitting a six-storey residential block along Palokunnankatu.
Officials revised the Lapintie 4 plan after the Pirkanmaa wellbeing area issued a supportive statement. They added a service-housing designation, cut the new building by one floor and adjusted a linking section between parts.
The draft would also see the 1980s Hotel Pinja removed to make way for an eight-storey infill on the Olympiantalo plot at Satakunnankatu and Aleksanterinkatu. The massing is designed to read as seven storeys with an inset eighth, and Olympiantalo itself would be protected. The plan prepares the Johanneksen koulutalo site for future needs by allowing the current single-storey modular extension to be rebuilt as three storeys while safeguarding the older school buildings.
