Stolen Euthasol from Ylöjärvi Vet Clinic Sold as Benzodiazepines, Several Users Exposed
A 240 ml bottle of the euthanasia drug Euthasol was stolen from a Ylöjärvi veterinary clinic and later sold on the street disguised as benzodiazepines, exposing several people to the drug.
A bottle of Euthasol containing 240 millilitres of pentobarbital was stolen from the HaukiVet veterinary clinic in Kuru, Ylöjärvi over the weekend. The vial has been sold on the street disguised as benzodiazepines, and Tampere addiction services have treated several people exposed to the drug, YLE reports.
Juuso Niemenpää, a doctor at Tampere A-clinic, said people who thought they were buying calming benzodiazepines instead received the lethal barbiturate. One person had already passed the drug's effects when seen by services.
Police say the 240 ml bottle, kept in a single vial, limits the number of doses. One gram of pentobarbital can be fatal. There is no antidote.
Niemenpää warned that sellers often mislabel substances on the street, increasing the danger, and said addiction services do not probe patients' supply sources so as to preserve trust. Police are asking anyone with information about the theft or related sales to come forward.
