Tampere and Austin sign five-year pact to deepen ties in semiconductors and physical AI
Tampere and Austin have signed a five-year memorandum to deepen cooperation on semiconductors, startups, advanced manufacturing and physical AI. The aim is to boost business, research and talent links between the two cities.
Tampere and Austin signed a five-year memorandum of understanding at Austin City Hall. It covers cooperation on semiconductors, startups, defence and dual‑use technologies, advanced manufacturing and physical AI.
The agreement, signed by Mayor Ilmari Nurminen and Austin Mayor Kirk Watson, is intended to build business networks and boost research and talent collaboration. It also promotes joint projects between companies, universities and other organisations. The cities will set annual objectives and track shared metrics to assess progress.
Tampere says the pact will help local companies scale into the U.S. market and raise awareness among Austin and Texas-based firms about opportunities in Tampere and Europe. Irene Vekkeli, Director of Economic Development and Innovation for the City of Tampere, said Austin’s openness to rapid action matches Tampere’s way of working and provides a practical foundation for future cooperation.
It builds on the city's recent AI research sparring with Tampere University and earlier coverage of Tampere's emergence as a hub for defence and dual‑use technologies.
