Tampere Expands Fire Station Network to Ease Traffic Strain

Tamperelainen reports that Tampere plans five new fire stations to cope with denser development and rising traffic, targeting Rahola, Janka, Kaukajärvi, Ruotula and Hiedanranta. The plan is included in the regional council's investment plan, and the project aims to strengthen Tampere's fire-safety network as the city grows.

Officials say Nekala’s new station is the furthest along, with completion planned for 2027 as part of the investment plan, and the Janka project has a draft plan with a temporary unit planned before the new station is completed. The Janka site is being prepared to ensure coverage while the permanent facility is built, and the Tampere authorities are exploring a temporary base for this year.

Other sites are studied to improve coverage as growth continues: Kaukajärvi would be located near a bypass road to serve Vehmaisia and Linnainmaa; Ruotula would serve the Tays hospital area and Kaleva; and Hiedanranta would support growth in Western Tampere and Lentävänniemi. The plan would also bring Tampere’s existing network closer to residents, alongside the Nekala project.

Currently Tampere has the central fire station in the city center and Hervanta, plus Tampere VPK and Teisko VPK stations. Nekala’s new station is slated for 2027. Historically Tampere also had stations in Pispala, Messukylä and Linnainmaa; Pispala operated from 1957 to 2009, Messukylä’s temporary station served from 1947 for more than 30 years until Linnainmaa opened in 1979, and the old sites near the Tampere-Kangasala border were closed in 2018 after the new station was built.
