Tampere Fans to Celebrate Men's Volleyball Team's Historic European Championship Bronze

YLE reports that fans will gather at Tampere Central Square on Monday evening to celebrate Finland's men's volleyball team after its historic European Championship bronze, the country's first-ever medal at the tournament, won in Milan. The city event starts at 5:30 pm and will feature the players and a lineup of performers; YLE will carry live television coverage from 6:00 pm and stream the event on Yle Areena. Finland reached the podium after a dramatic run that included a quarterfinal victory over reigning world champions Italy on their home court, a semifinal loss to France and a win over Slovenia in the bronze match. The celebration follows the shock win over Italy in Turin earlier in the tournament and the strong home support at Nokia Arena in Tampere. Local paper Tamperelainen says the team described the event as a public thank-you “for the fans and everyone who supported us during the tournament” and names additional performers including Elastinen, pop acts Ani and Hugo, and Tampere-born baritone Valtteri Torikka. It adds that the street party was opened by Finnish artist Elastinen on the main stage, with the celebration then centred on that opening and a communal salute to the team’s podium finish. Aamulehti reports that after winning the medal the team returned to Tampere – where the campaign began with group matches at Nokia Arena – and that it is streaming the 17:30 event with a live text feed. YLE adds that nearly the whole squad is expected to attend the celebration, with Eemi Tervaportti the only notable absence; before the square event the players will visit Tampere City Hall to meet Mayor Ilmari Nurminen and other city leaders. Tamperelainen quotes tournament secretary general Riia Martinoja saying preparations for the celebration began immediately after Saturday's bronze match, and she declined to predict turnout, calling the gathering a chance to thank supporters for backing the team through the tournament.
