Tampere Tightens Measures to Combat Rats Near Härmälä Tramline
Tampere city officials outlined measures to remove food and shelter that attract rats and to tackle sightings near the Härmälä tramline, warning that large infrastructure works can push rodents into new neighbourhoods.
City officials outlined new measures to remove food and shelter that attract rats and tackle sightings along the Härmälä tramline during Monday's city council question time, YLE reported. Green councillor Johanna Kirjavainen raised the issue. Assistant mayor Ilkka Porttikivi said the health protection unit has received rat reports from Härmälä this year, but not at levels markedly different from other areas. He added that a new reporting system makes year-to-year comparisons difficult. Porttikivi also pointed to responsibilities under the health protection law. Tamperelainen reports that property owners are responsible for pest control, and the measures being rolled out focus on making conditions less favourable for rats by removing food sources, denying shelter and nesting sites, and keeping shared spaces clean. Measures include requiring construction sites to secure waste and work areas, limiting rat movement during sewer renovations, and directing Tampere Infra to improve maintenance of parks and green spaces to remove potential food sources. City planners will factor rat sightings into future projects and advise builders on prevention. They will also strengthen coordination between property owners and municipal teams so responses can be rapid and carried out across multiple buildings. Officials warn that large infrastructure works such as tram construction and sewer openings can disturb nests and routes, pushing rats into new neighbourhoods. The city has been tracking the tram project's effects on biodiversity, including meadow strips and street-tree planting as part of tram biodiversity measures.
