Tampereen Energia opens Kolmenkulma bioenergy terminal to bolster district heating supply
Tampereen Energia has opened a bioenergy terminal in Kolmenkulma, Nokia, capable of storing about one-third of Tampere’s annual wood fuel to support Naistenlahti and Hervanta heat plants.
According to local paper Tamperelainen, Tampereen Energia has commissioned a new bioenergy terminal in Kolmenkulma, Nokia. The facility can store up to one-third of Tampere’s annual wood fuel and will serve as interim storage for the Naistenlahti power station and the Hervanta wood-chip heating centre, allowing deliveries to be scheduled more flexibly and enabling faster responses to shifts in electricity prices.
Paavo Knaapi, Tampereen Energia’s director for production and distribution, said the terminal "gives us the ability to react quickly to changes in heat production," adding that the project strengthens district heating supply security and streamlines fuel logistics. Shorter transport distances should cut costs and reduce the carbon footprint. The local fuel supply chain indirectly employs roughly 200–300 people in the Pirkanmaa region.
The terminal complements regional efforts to decarbonise heat production and improve supply resilience, as noted in earlier coverage of heating electrification in Tampere.
