TikTok Frames Tampere as Violent, Nostalgic and Rapidly Changing

A spot check by Tamperelainen after a 14-year-old searched TikTok on May 18 and 20 found young Tampere residents encountering a steady stream of violent, nostalgic and fast-changing city imagery. The results were stark.

Among the most viewed clips was a May 16 Ice Cage 7 fight at Nokia Arena — a video by fighter Salar Sharifi that gathered more than 15,500 views in a day. A before-and-after montage comparing Tampere in 2009 and 2025 has racked up some 336,000 views.

Other popular posts included urban-exploration footage of the old Santalahti roofing factory (about 190,000 views), a nostalgic 1970s compilation posted April 9, 2026 (114,000 views), and a Grand Theft Auto–style AI video (130,000 views).

Researchers warn short-video platforms can steer young users quickly toward harmful material. A 2022 study by the Center for Countering Digital Hate found algorithms can begin serving harmful content within minutes of signup.

The check suggests TikTok presents Tampere as a place of violence, urban curiosity and rapid development — a portrait shaped as much by algorithms as by events on the ground.

The piece was produced by an eighth-grade student from Vesilahti Unified School on a work placement at Tamperelainen.
