Small translucent clusters found in gardens are likely snail eggs that may hatch within a few weeks or overwinter until next summer.
Tomi Kumpulainen of the Tampere Natural History Museum told Aamulehti that small clusters found in gardens are likely snail eggs. They may hatch within a few weeks or, if laid in autumn, overwinter until the following summer.
Kumpulainen, who answers readers' nature questions for Aamulehti, notes both land snails and shelled snails can lay eggs throughout the summer, and moist weather encourages breeding. He asks people to send a photo, location, observation time and an estimate of size to [email protected]. He normally handles sightings from Pirkanmaa but may help other areas when possible.
Eggs do not usually grow after being laid, though their mucus layer can sometimes absorb moisture and swell. Hatching typically takes at least a few weeks and can stretch to a month. If eggs are laid in autumn, they will overwinter and hatch the following summer. Young snails that hatch into favorable conditions can grow quickly and reach maturity within that same season.
The museum has recently responded to similar reader sightings, including a leaf snail photographed climbing a wall in Hämeenkyrö and grove snails mating in Hervanta.
