Veera Mattila breaks two-minute barrier in Tampere, misses Euro qualifying by 0.15s
Veera Mattila finally ran under two minutes in Tampere, winning the 800m in 1:59.95 but missing the European Championship qualifying mark by 0.15 seconds.
Veera Mattila finally broke the two-minute barrier in Tampere on Sunday, clocking 1:59.95 to win the 800 metres. The result came after a long spell of health problems, Aamulehti reported.
The 23-year-old from Kiikoinen had been hailed three years ago after a surprise under-23 European silver in Leppävaara, and many expected her to follow Sara Lappalainen as Finland’s next top 800m runner. Instead she spent recent seasons fighting injuries and mysterious breathing problems that forced her to miss major races. Mattila suspects a bout of pulmonary chlamydia reduced her oxygen uptake, and the uncertainty left her blaming herself: "I blamed myself terribly for those problems," she told reporters. Mental coaching helped her regain confidence, and steady autumn training, uninterrupted this time, laid the groundwork for Sunday’s win. It was a breakthrough.
The victory was confirmation and frustration at once. Match fitness produced the long-sought sub-two performance, but she missed the European Championship qualifying mark of 1:59.80 by a hair and called the outcome bittersweet: "It could have gone faster, but we'll take this now," she said. Mattila pointed to Sara Lappalainen’s Finnish record of 1:59.41 from the Tokyo Olympics as a target and said she hopes for more high-quality race opportunities this season.
