Why is Suolijärvi not in Tampere's nature protection program?

Tamminen, Pajunen and Pajunen argue the lake's landscape is stunning and that it serves as a vital everyday refuge with beaches and trails. They note that surveys conducted around 15 years ago found roughly 20 hectares of forests around the lake that could fit the Metso program; the area likely contains tens of hectares with protective value.

The city has planned and carried out several harvests near Suolijärvi; this autumn's planned cuts have shifted to winter but the area remains unprotected until it is included in the protection plan. Several associations have urged protection, calling for the removal of motorized logging and for focusing on preserving and restoring important natural values. The authors compare Tampere's low protection share (around 1.9%) with Turku's 5.5% and EU biodiversity goals, noting that Tampere faces a March council review and urging officials to include Suolijärvi and other sites.
