14-Year-Old Matias Polku Runs Someuutiset Youth News Site
14-year-old Matias Polku launched Someuutiset in February 2025 to cover social-media phenomena and influencers; he and friend Jalmari Valli aim to publish one story a day while juggling school.
He once hated the news as a child but grew curious after reading domestic outlets and international sources such as the BBC and The New York Times. He launched Someuutiset in February 2025 to cover social-media phenomena and influencers. At first he used AI to produce stories, but he stopped about a year ago. Now he and his friend Jalmari Valli aim to post one story a day, though school often gets in the way.
Each article takes roughly 45 minutes to produce — research, source checks, filming and writing included. They contact authorities and influencers by email and note when a source cannot be reached as part of transparent reporting.
He follows the Journalists' Guidelines, and the site draws 2,000–4,000 readers a month, mainly young people from the Helsinki region. He hopes to grow Someuutiset into Pirkanmaa’s leading youth news outlet, explore commercial partners or a small subscription, and learn professional journalism during his Tamperelainen placement.
