Akaa seeks partner to transform Toijala station into mixed-use hub
Akaa has launched a participant search to find a long-term partner to plan and deliver the renewal of the Toijala station area.
The city board has launched a participant search to secure a long-term partner for planning and delivering the Toijala station area renewal.
A market dialogue held ahead of the search attracted wide interest from industry actors, giving officials a solid foundation to move the project forward and select a suitable partner.
Toijala railway station is the second-busiest passenger station in Pirkanmaa. It is a major transport hub.
The plan is to create a diverse, lively district that will house the city's facilities, including an upper secondary school, a library and municipal administration premises, alongside new housing, commercial services and potentially other functions.
A partnership agreement with retailer Kesko already envisions a commercial complex of roughly 3,000 to 8,000 square metres of gross floor area as part of the development.
"The successful market dialogue showed that developing the Toijala station area attracts broad interest from sector operators. We have a great opportunity to build an attractive area around one of Pirkanmaa's busiest stations that serves residents, businesses and travellers," said Nuutti Sahlberg, Akaa city project manager. "Next we aim to find a partner with whom the project can be developed purposefully over the long term."
The participant search seeks an experienced partner with a proven track record in demanding urban development projects and the capacity to work with the city on a sustained redevelopment programme for the station area.
Earlier coverage has highlighted Toijala's railway heritage and community events, such as the 150-year railway anniversary at Toijala station and the Bee Art project opening at the station, underlining the station's role as a local focal point.
