Toijala Celebrates 150 Years of the Turku–Tampere–Hämeenlinna Railway with Museum Trains
Toijala station will host historic trains, music and family activities on 22 June to mark the 150th anniversary of the Turku–Tampere–Hämeenlinna railway.
Akaa city announced it will mark the 150th anniversary of the Turku–Tampere–Hämeenlinna railway at Toijala station on Monday, 22 June, with a day of historic trains, music and family activities. The centerpiece of the celebration is a rare gathering of museum trains: Suomen Rautatiemuseo’s steam train Prinsessa from Hyvinkää, a restored lightweight railcar (colloquially known as a "lättähattu") from Tampere, and the steam locomotive Ankka from Valkeakoski. Organisers say several pieces of historic rolling stock will be operating and on display throughout the day; scheduled arrivals fall roughly between 13:14 and 13:25, with an official ceremony planned for 13:35–14:10. It should be a rare sight. After the ceremony, activities continue on the Veturimuseo grounds, where an exhibition coach will open, a new railway history book will be launched and experts will deliver short talks on the line's past. Live performances are booked, including Flok Vocals, Viitosraide and the Tampere railway workers’ band. Organisers emphasise that while the celebration is open to all, historic train rides require separate tickets and some departures need advance reservation. "Our aim is to bring railway history to life for people – through sound, steam and movement," said Valtteri Mönkö, the event’s lead producer. The event is organised by a wide partnership led by Akaa city and involving Etelä-Pirkanmaan Osuuspankki, Veturimuseo, Toijalan asema, the 5000 m/s music festival company and railway enthusiasts from around Finland. "Such a broad programme would not be possible without strong cooperation," said Jarmo Julkunen, Akaa’s culture and events coordinator, who highlighted the role of volunteers and multiple organisations in making the day possible.
