Brighton's €28m Deal for Zadok Yohanna Exposes Veikkausliiga's Transfer Gap
Brighton paid €28 million for 18-year-old Zadok Yohanna – a Nordic transfer record – and Tampere football figures say Veikkausliiga clubs could earn much more if the Finnish league adapts its playing style and scouting.
Brighton paid €28 million for 18-year-old Zadok Yohanna, the largest transfer ever recorded in the Nordics. The 2025 deal was negotiated with help from Miika Takkula, AIK's recruitment director and former Ilves sporting director, Tamperelainen reported. Iikka Miettinen believes Veikkausliiga clubs could secure far bigger fees if the Finnish league adapts its playing style and scouting.
Miettinen points to clear differences in match tempo and exposure. Swedish Allsvenskan games move quicker. They feature more duels, sprints and one-on-one situations that make players easier to evaluate for scouts, while Veikkausliiga often emphasizes rigid team shape and is frequently interrupted by stoppages. That style, combined with lower average benchmarks for player sales, keeps Finnish transfer prices down even when individual talent is comparable. KuPS has managed transfers in the €1.2–1.5 million range, but Miettinen says values must rise across the board before headline sums become realistic.
Miettinen says the fixes are simple rather than radical: give players more freedom in attack, allow firmer duels, and raise clubs' recruiting budgets so they can compete for promising youngsters abroad. Partnerships such as Ilves' collaboration with the JMG academy in Ivory Coast, together with revenue from European competition and player sales, are the routes to building the budgets needed to close the gap with Sweden.
