Centre Party Calls for Extra Trams at Events and Clearer Hämeenkatu Markings

The Centre Party's Tampere city council group has proposed adding tram services for big events and clarifying pedestrian and cycle markings on Hämeenkatu.

Tampere city council begins a new term today, and the Centre Party's council group has submitted two traffic initiatives aimed at boosting tram capacity at large events and clarifying pedestrian and cycle arrangements on Hämeenkatu, Tamperelainen reports.

The party wants event forecasting built into tram planning so extra services can be added on evenings with big events. It also asks the city to study improvements to night services, including whether line 1 could run to Lentävänniemi later.

Councillors say the current paving makes the bike lane and sidewalk hard to distinguish when wet or dirty. City monitoring shows most people use the correct route, but some pedestrians and cyclists still mix them up.

Proposed fixes include permanent white markings, clearer cycle symbols or other solutions that suit Hämeenkatu's streetscape.

The proposals follow the city's recent plan to convert tram crossings into marked pedestrian crossings this summer, a programme that explicitly excluded Hämeenkatu.
