Major construction projects in Tampere city centre – rail yard works, tram expansion, a new underground road and multiple bridge and street renovations – are progressing on schedule this year.

Major upgrades across Tampere city centre, including rail yard improvements, tram-line expansion, a new underground road and multiple bridge and street renovations, are progressing on schedule this year. Mikko Nurminen, head of the city environment service area, says the Hatanpään valtatie and Tampereen valtatie intersection was converted to traffic-light control this autumn and has eased flows. Temporary arrangements have been designed to keep everyday routes as stable as possible.

Paasikivenkatu’s traffic works are complete. A separated north-side cycle route now runs alongside one motor lane in each direction, and the scheme clears the way for a new residential block at Onkiniemenkulma. Puutarhakatu’s larger street overhaul, triggered by worn water and sewer pipes, continues with finishing touches due by the end of October 2026. The project has added a two-way cycle track, improved stormwater systems and installed a district cooling pipe.

Three new or renewed bridges opened in June 2026: Erkkilän silta, finished more than two months early as part of the rail yard project, plus Vesitehtaansilta and Särkänsilta. Erkkilän bridge renewal was reported earlier as part of the wider Erkkilänkatu renewal works covering Erkkilänkatu bridge works. The Tampere rail yard works, led by an alliance between the Finnish Transport Agency (Väylävirasto) and Kreate, closed the Itsenäisyydenkadun underpass to all traffic except the tram from 1 June 2026. The closure will remain in place until project completion in 2031. Rail bridges above the underpass are being replaced at a rate of one per year, with the first deck poured in September.

The Pirkkala–Linnainmaa tram first phase was 63 percent complete by early October, with 5.8 of 7.1 kilometres of double track already installed. Work on the Yliopistontunneli beneath Viinikankatu has begun to open a new southbound underground driving link, with Kreate as contractor; the start of that tunnel work was announced in May when the Yliopistontunneli contract and preparatory works were described. A temporary pedestrian and cycle bridge over Tammerkoski opened in July to keep central routes connected.

Fewer major traffic reorganisations are planned for 2027, although projects such as the Kaleva crossing replacement and park improvements remain on the drawing board pending budget decisions, the city says.
