Ceramics Tops List as Tampere Adult Education Kicks Off 960-Course Autumn Term

Tampere Adult Education Centre kicks off its academic year this September with more than 960 courses, 443 of them starting in the first week of the month. About 14,400 students have enrolled for the autumn term, a figure close to last year’s 14,600 despite a smaller overall course list, city officials said.

Demand remains strong for hands-on and hobby courses. Communications specialist Anna-Katariina Maksimoff says the centre raised some fees and reduced course numbers but still reached more learners relative to its offering. Ceramics is the top draw. There are 92 people on the waiting list even after new pottery facilities opened at Nekala Cultural Centre; the centre now offers pottery places for roughly 300 students across Sampola, Nekala and Ylöjärvi’s Kauraslampi school. Other popular choices include fitness ballet, garment sewing, pilates, woodworking and a Korean home-cooking class that already has 21 people waiting.

The student association will guide newcomers at Sampola for two weeks, and about 330 courses start there by mid-September. Free public lectures begin in the auditorium at the start of the month, opening with the first talk in the "The World’s Great Rivers" series on Thursday 3 September 2026. Chair Kaisa Helenius says the group aims to help students find classrooms, build community and share information about its activities and the Kesäpirt summer venue.

Earlier this year, the centre launched two fast-track training routes aimed at helping about 308 unemployed recent graduates gain vocational qualifications and access TAMK.
