Closure of Hopealinja Leaves Viikinsaari Summer Ferry in Doubt
City-owned ferry operator Suomen Hopealinja has ceased operations, leaving Pyhäjärvi without a confirmed summer boat service next year and prompting calls for the city to assign responsibility and funding for water transport.
City-owned ferry operator Suomen Hopealinja has ceased operations, leaving Pyhäjärvi without a confirmed summer boat service next year, Tamperelainen reports. The closure follows earlier reporting that the city decided to end Hopealinja's commercial operations after the 2026 season the city's closure decision and has opened talks with prospective buyers to find alternatives to sell the operator.
Tampere port manager Tuomas Salovaara warns of a stark funding and governance gap. The city's public transport budget shows a roughly €38 million shortfall, while Hopealinja's annual losses were only a few hundred thousand euros. He calls the imbalance "absurd" and says decision-making is siloed across service areas, leaving water transport with no clear administrative home or dedicated budget. The city has discussed buying a roughly 100-passenger electric waterbus since 2023; Salovaara estimates it would cost about €1 million. Such a vessel could run hour-long Pyhäjärvi circuits and link into the Nysse network, but no procurement or operating decision has been made.
Many physical prerequisites for a waterbus are already in place: docks, charging at Laukontori and piers at Viikinsaari, Hatanpää and other shores. The city could operate at least one route to Viikinsaari with M/S Tammerkoski if needed. Café and restaurant services on the island were run by Hopealinja, so a new operator would be required for full service. Salovaara urges the city to name a responsible body, give the project an administrative home and budget, repurpose usable Hopealinja vessels for local routes, and separately safeguard the museum steamship S/S Tarjanne even if it runs at a loss. He points to Helsinki, Turku, Kuopio and Lahti as examples where water traffic is treated as an integrated part of urban transport and vitality.
