Construction Vibrations Could Force Sudden Closure of Kaleva Intersection Bridge

Tampere is monitoring the Kaleva intersection bridge as piling and blasting for the University Tunnel entrance raise concerns about the structure’s stability. Tamperelainen reports project engineer Jukka Rantala saying the bridge’s condition has worsened and construction vibrations are increasing the risk of an unexpected closure.
The city has planned to replace the Viinikankatu-crossing bridge for about a decade because its condition has steadily declined and permanent weight limits are in place. Rantala says the bridge is already under continuous monitoring and that planners must be ready for the worst-case scenario: the bridge being shut suddenly and urgently rebuilt in the middle of the tunnel works.
Engineers are considering keeping traffic moving throughout any replacement by building the new bridge in two halves, as was done with Sorinsilta, or by erecting a temporary span south of the current structure. No firm schedule has been set, but aligning the bridge renewal with the tunnel entrance works would ease traffic arrangements and reduce safety risks. The city also expects to replace Sorinsilta under the Kalevantie master plan; that work would be staged half-by-half to keep routes open for events at Nokia Arena and for emergency access, and is likely to take around two years when carried out.
