Councillor Proposes Turning 100-Year-Old Lakeside Sauna into 'Art Sauna' at Sara Hildén Museum

Councillor Julia Sangervo has asked the city to renovate and reopen a 100-year-old lakeside sauna beside the Sara Hildén Art Museum in Särkänniemi and proposes developing it as an "art sauna" combining contemporary art, architecture and the Näsijärvi shoreline.

According to Tamperelainen, in a council initiative Julia Sangervo asked the city to renovate and reopen the 100-year-old lakeside sauna next to the Sara Hildén Art Museum in Särkänniemi. The wooden sauna, the oldest surviving building in the Särkänniemi area, has been closed for about 30 years. Built as part of brewery overseer J. Kupiainen’s villa, its original interior has been removed but the structure is believed to be in good condition. It already has electricity and water. It would hold roughly 20 people.

Sangervo says the city owns the building and must take responsibility for its future, though outside partners could be sought to help run and maintain it. She argues the idea fits current zoning work for the Sara Hildén museum area, which aims to allow renovation and expansion of the museum, and suggests developing the site as an "art sauna" where contemporary art, architecture and the Näsijärvi shoreline form a unique attraction. She cites Mänttä‑Vilppula’s Serlachius Taidesauna as an example of how a sauna can boost a museum complex and serve both public and private events.

The initiative comes as Tampere has seen several recent sauna projects, from the reopening of a historic public sauna at Amuri last month to the reservation of a site for a year‑round public sauna at Härmälänranta earlier this year.
