The Turku Court of Appeal reduced the sentence of 34-year-old Rainer Hedman in a large loan-fraud scheme tied to Pirkanmaa and convicted a previously acquitted accomplice, who received a suspended prison term.

According to Yle, the Turku Court of Appeal this week reduced the sentence of 34-year-old Rainer Leif Allan Hedman, the main suspect in a large loan-fraud scheme linked to Pirkanmaa, and convicted a woman who had been acquitted by the district court.

Between August 2023 and April 2024 the ring generated about €600,000 by filing repeated loan applications for the same person from different locations, often within 20 to 30 minutes and sometimes just minutes apart, in places such as Jämsä, Mänttä-Vilppula and Multia. In September 2025 the district court had sentenced Hedman to two years and seven months for dozens of aggravated and standard fraud counts. The Court of Appeal reduced that term to two years and four months.

A more significant change involved a 61-year-old woman who had been charged with 42 counts of assistance. The district court dismissed those charges for lack of evidence, but the Court of Appeal found that she topped up a phone used in the crimes, helped withdraw proceeds in cash, stored documents related to the frauds and received part of the illicit gains. Prosecutors argued she acted as a co-perpetrator, but the court concluded she did not take part in submitting the loan applications or deceiving victims. She was given a suspended prison sentence of one year and eight months and, along with other convicted defendants, ordered to forfeit up to nearly €189,000 to the state. The ruling can be appealed to the Supreme Court; applications for leave to appeal are due by 27 November.
