Deputy Mayor to Join Volunteers Pulling Lupins at Tampere Parks
Deputy Mayor Ilkka Porttikivi and city councillors will join volunteer events this summer to remove invasive lupins from several Tampere parks, including a Niemenranta session on June 2 (17–19).
The City of Tampere quoted Deputy Mayor Ilkka Porttikivi: "Shovel work is a concrete way to help Tampere's nature," Porttikivi said.
Porttikivi and city councillors will take part in lupin‑removal volunteer events this summer at Huikkaan Pekanpuisto, Sahavainionpuisto in Niemenranta (Tuesday June 2, 17–19), Epilänharju and Peltolammin Rukkamäenpuisto.
The work aims to protect sun‑facing slopes for a dark‑flowered species and to clear meadow space for native plants such as wood cranesbill, devil's‑bit scabious, meadow bellflower and oxeye daisy — all important for pollinators and local biodiversity. Environment Director Kati Skippari and biodiversity development manager Kaisa Mustajärvi will join the Niemenranta event to discuss Tampere's nature with volunteers.
Neighbours and dog‑walkers who have noticed expanding lupin stands are encouraged to take part. Events are open to everyone and you can join for just part of the time. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves and a shovel if possible; organisers will provide tools, snacks and volunteer insurance. The work is part of Tampere's nature and biodiversity (LUMO) programme and is organised by ProAgria Etelä‑Suomen MKM Maisemapalvelut together with the City of Tampere.
