Tampere Mobilises 56 Volunteer Teams for May 9 Citywide Cleanup

Tampere will host a citywide cleanup on Saturday, May 9, when 56 volunteer groups will clear parks, streets and bike paths between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Tamperelainen reports.
Organisers — Tampereen Infra Oy, Pirkanmaan Jätehuolto, the city of Tampere and Ekokumppanit — say the number of registered teams has risen from 52 last year. Volunteers collected about 3.2 tonnes of litter last year; in 2024 they picked up roughly 3.9 tonnes, and the record was 4.2 tonnes in 2022.
Teams pick their own sites — parks, bike paths, vacant lots or street verges — and collect only litter left by people. Road grit and fallen leaves are cleared mechanically.
Pirkanmaan Jätehuolto will place a 600‑litre waste container at each agreed pickup point and stock them with rolls of garbage bags. As a new trial, each group will also receive an extra roll of litter bags. The campaign aims to harness local volunteer energy to keep Tampere’s public spaces cleaner.
