Eppu Normaali to End 50-Year Touring Career with Three Farewell Shows at Ratina

Eppu Normaali will stop touring after 50 years, ending with three farewell concerts at Ratina Stadium in Tampere on 6–8 August, with the final show on Saturday 8 August, local paper Tamperelainen says. The band, formed in Ylöjärvi, will cease regular touring but plans concerts and festival appearances next year to mark its 50th anniversary.

Singer Martti Syrjä recalled the group’s original ambition was modest, saying, "The only thing you could imagine as a distant, incomprehensible goal was to record once." Guitarist Juha Torvinen points to the Ramones’ 1977 show at Tampere’s Teku as the moment that opened their eyes to new possibilities. They note that the Finnish music business has shifted toward solo artists and tightly managed, productised careers; Syrjä lamented that some artists burn out and called for "some kind of awakening." Torvinen said gigs moved from dance halls to restaurants and then into a festival-heavy calendar, replacing the big midsummer payouts of earlier decades. Eppu Normaali’s songs, they add, have become part of the national songbook and are often sung back by audiences at shows.

Tamperelainen also reports that Poko Records founder Epe Helenius praised Eppu Normaali’s decision to end the long touring run. Helenius recalls that he signed Teddy and The Tigers as his first recording act and Eppu Normaali as his second, and notes that the band’s 1979 song "Jee jee" explicitly referenced his role in bringing them national attention.

Earlier coverage estimated nearly 100,000 attendees for the farewell events the organisers' estimate. Tamperelainen describes audience anecdotes from the opening of the farewell run at Ratina Stadium on Thursday: for example, Maire Pukala, who has been attending Eppu Normaali events since she was 18; a mother and daughter celebrating a 70th birthday; a trio from Nokia who bought tickets only that week; and two lifelong friends who travelled from Rovaniemi and Enontekiö after purchasing tickets at 9 a.m.

YLE adds that the farewell shows are Thursday–Saturday at Ratina Stadium and states the last ticket disappeared "almost instantly." It also says YLE will record Saturday’s final performance and air it on TV and online on 6 December 2026, and that the band announced the decision to stop touring last autumn. YLE further includes members’ specific comments on not shutting the door on music (possible collaborative projects through Aku’s Tehdas in Ylöjärvi and Torvinen playing with other lineups), Syrjä’s plan to revive his visual art hobbies, the promise that the concerts will be recognisably Eppu Normaali with "no pyrotechnics or confetti," and Syrjä’s quote that the final songs could bring "quite a turmoil in one’s soul," plus the band’s lineup list.

According to the City of Tampere, the free annual Tampere Filharmonia park concert in Sorsapuisto on 8 August coincides with Eppu Normaali’s farewell show at Ratina.
