Plaque Marks Spot in Ylöjärvi Where Eppu Normaali Name Was Born
A plaque now marks the smoking spot at the former Kauraslampi School where the name Eppu Normaali was first suggested in 1976.
On Tuesday Ylöjärvi unveiled a commemorative plaque on the wall of the former Kauraslampi School, marking the smoking spot where in August 1976 Mikko Saarela suggested the name Eppu Normaali, YLE reports. It was a modest but poignant tribute. On Facebook, the band called the ceremony moving.
Principal Satu Lahtinen said the marker is meant to remind pupils that small ideas can grow into something much larger. The town held a mock graduation, presenting a diploma to Martti Syrjä, who left his upper secondary studies decades ago, and naming him an honorary graduate.
Kauraslampi School has previously been known as Moision koulu and Ylöjärven yhteiskoulu. Ylöjärvi’s upper secondary now operates at the Valo education centre.
The band celebrated its 50th anniversary at Ratinan Stadium and gave its final performance there in August 2026. The plaque follows the band's three sold-out farewell concerts at Ratina Stadium in August.
