Erkki Pystynen, former Speaker of the Finnish Parliament and Tampere University professor, died in July 2026.

According to Aamulehti, Erkki Pystynen died in July 2026. Colleagues described him as "more a statesman than a politician." A long-serving National Coalition Party (Kokoomus) politician and Tampere city councilor, he was Speaker of Parliament from 1983 to 1987.

He sat in Parliament from 1975 to 1991 and chaired both the constitutional committee and the education committee. He earned cross-party respect for a low-key, principled style. His work focused on property rights, municipal and education matters; while leading the constitutional committee he defended creating a Ministry of the Environment.

Pystynen had a long academic career at Tampere University as a professor of municipal politics and held administrative posts there, including a brief spell as rector. In 1986 he openly rebuked President Mauno Koivisto at the opening of Parliament, an unusually direct clash that underscored his insistence on parliamentary authority.
