Helinä Pahlman, pioneering Tampere‑born social sciences teacher, dies at 88
Helinä Pahlman, a pioneering social sciences teacher from Tampere, died in Nokia on 6 August 2026 after a short illness.
Born on 12 December 1937, Pahlman grew up during the Winter War and the Continuation War and developed a lasting bond with music through her father, an organist and choir conductor.
She studied at the Sibelius Academy and the University of Helsinki. From 1971 she worked as a history and social-studies lecturer at Helsinki II Norssi, where she developed integration-based project learning that combined social sciences with music and visual arts. Her experimental approach and energetic teaching style engaged pupils and left a mark on generations of trainee teachers.
A lifelong traveller and active cultural figure, she witnessed historical moments from the Acropolis to Damascus and was in Beijing during the June 1989 upheavals.
In retirement she returned to Tampere and remained socially active. She was 88. Her son signed her obituary. She died in Nokia on 6 August 2026 after a short illness, Aamulehti reports.
