€4 Million in State Grants to Fund 18 Walking and Cycling Projects Across Finland

ePressi reports that state grants totalling €4 million will fund 18 walking and cycling projects across Finland in the 2026 investment round, including one in Tampere.

Traficom received 91 applications seeking around €14.3 million and selected projects that aim to improve everyday routes and make walking and cycling safer and more attractive. Demand far outstripped supply.

The funding is provided through the walking and cycling investment programme, which targets infrastructure improvements that support a modal shift for short trips. "The walking and cycling investment programme aims to make everyday trips smoother, safer and more attractive. When routes are clear and functional, walking and cycling can become viable choices for more people on daily trips," Traficom special expert Hanna Strömmer said.

Grants may be used to build or upgrade pathways, install route equipment and expand bicycle parking. Recipients this round include a mix of large cities and smaller municipalities, with projects in Helsinki, Tampere, Kuopio, Joensuu, Vaasa and other towns across the country.

The programme has supported municipal projects since 2018. Between 2018 and 2025 it awarded about €94 million to 292 projects in nearly 100 municipalities. The 2026 round continues that multi-year effort to boost active travel. Tampere recently climbed to 45th in the 2025 Copenhagenize Global Cycling Index after completing major cycling route upgrades and expanding bike-share and parking facilities, according to the city's May report the city's May report.
