Finavia completes €1.1m runway-approach lighting upgrade at Tampere–Pirkkala Airport
Finavia has completed a €1.1 million upgrade to the runway approach lighting at Tampere–Pirkkala Airport, carried out this summer without interrupting scheduled flights.
The work, which cost €1.1 million, replaced the runway's approach lighting and was carried out this summer without interrupting scheduled route flights, Tamperelainen reported.
The new approach light line was installed at the east end of the runway. It is a safety-critical system that helps pilots identify runway location and alignment in darkness, heavy rain, snowfall and other low-visibility conditions. Construction finished on schedule and caused no interruptions to commercial services.
Tampere–Pirkkala is one of Finavia's four joint-use airports serving both military and civilian traffic. Passenger numbers are rising. The airport handled just over 140,000 passengers in 2025. In January–June 2026 it recorded 66,505 passengers, a 3.6 percent increase from the same period last year. Finnair will resume daily Helsinki–Tampere flights starting October 2026, and Air Baltic operates routes to Malaga and Riga.
