Four-year-old hurt after falling between cupboard bed and wall at Lempäälä daycare; safety probe opened
A four-year-old at Kuokkalankulma daycare in Lempäälä was injured after falling between a cupboard bed and a wall during nap time; the national safety watchdog LVV has opened official supervision into the incident.
Parents in Lempäälä face renewed safety concerns after a four-year-old child was injured when they fell between a cupboard bed and a wall at the Kuokkalankulma daycare last Thursday, according to YLE.
The safety watchdog Lupa- ja valvontavirasto (LVV) has opened official supervision into the incident. Staff failed to notice the child, who had been wrapped under a thick blanket and remained in the bed when it was lifted at the end of nap time. The child suffered a cut to the lip.
The agency said the accident echoes a fatal case in Vantaa this spring and urged early childhood education providers to check that equipment is intact, used correctly and that personnel receive proper instruction. LVV’s early childhood education group manager Tanja Tiainen added that the Vantaa case should have prompted organisers to ensure guidance was followed.
The agency will prepare a supervisory decision, a legally binding ruling on whether laws and regulations were complied with. Lempäälä municipality informed all the daycare’s guardians about the event, acknowledged that staff did not follow agreed instructions, including the rule "Before lifting, ensure there is no child in the bed", and said nap room safety guidance will be tightened where needed.
