Hämeenkatu Attracts 3.7 Million Passersby in June–July

Pedestrian traffic along Hämeenkatu in central Tampere reached 3.728 million passersby in June and July combined, with 1.829 million in June and 1.899 million in July, data from the Tampereen pulssi app show.

Four measurement points along the street cover its length. Hämeensilta registered the largest June flow, with over 850,000 passersby, while the section between Rautatienkatu and Verkatehtaankatu saw the fewest, about 230,000. Tampere’s director of business and innovation, Irene Vekkeli, said the numbers point to a lively city centre and credited event organisers for drawing crowds. She also noted that weather played a role: this July was cooler (16.7°C) and much wetter (178.1 mm of rain) than last July (19.9°C and 80.9 mm), yet the overall decline in passersby was only modest.

Seventeen-year-olds Elsa Ylisalmi and Vieno Tiainen, who do not live downtown, say Tampere’s shopping selection has improved and keeps them coming in. Vieno buys most of her clothes in the city centre and shopping malls, while Elsa estimates about half of her purchases are made online. Both praised the availability of new clothing shops and secondhand options on Hämeenkatu.

The numbers add local detail to broader trends: the city reported 36.4 million visits to the commercial centre in 2025 city centre visit figures for 2025. Earlier monitoring showed mixed traffic changes on Hämeenkatu and nearby Hämeensilta, with more cyclists and e-scooter users in some sections previous Hämeenkatu/Hämeensilta monitoring.
