Cyclists and E-scooter Use Soars on Hämeensilta as Eastern Hämeenkatu Plummets
Cyclists and e-scooter users increased sharply on Hämeensilta in 2025, while traffic along Hämeenkatu was uneven – western and central monitoring points rose or stayed level, but the eastern stretch saw large drops in cyclists and scooter users.
Cyclists and e-scooter users surged on Hämeensilta last year, while pedestrian numbers edged up. Hämeensilta recorded 8.26 million pedestrians, 830,000 cyclists and 210,000 scooter users in 2025, increases of 0.4%, 12.5% and 15.2% respectively from 2024, according to the Traffic Development in Tampere 2025 count published by Tamperelainen.
August was the busiest month. A single cross-section recorded 810,000 pedestrians, 105,000 cyclists and 35,000 scooter users.
Traffic along Hämeenkatu is uneven. The western sections registered 6.6 million pedestrians (down 4.0%), 730,000 cyclists (up 0.1%) and 140,000 scooter users (down 6.0%). The new monitoring point by Raatihuone showed 8.53 million pedestrians, 770,000 cyclists and 150,000 scooter users. By contrast, the eastern stretch fell sharply year-on-year to 6.63 million pedestrians, with cyclists plunging 35.4% to 360,000 and scooter users dropping 21.5% to 110,000.
The rise in cycling on Hämeensilta aligns with the city's improved position in the 2025 Copenhagenize cycling index Tampere's cycling ranking. It also comes alongside measures introducing 10 km/h low-speed zones and weekend sobriety tests for rental e-scooters new e-scooter rules.
